Getting Started
I’ve never done yoga. Is it too late to start?
It’s never too late. Yoga is designed for all bodies and all experience levels. Many of our students came to yoga for the first time as adults. Starting later in life actually has advantages: you’re more likely to practise for the right reasons, appreciate the mental benefits, and be more committed. What matters is your willingness to show up.
Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?
No. Inflexible people often get the most benefit from yoga. Flexibility develops through consistent practice. You don’t need to be flexible to practise yoga; you practise yoga to become flexible. It’s a result, not a prerequisite.
What’s the difference between Hatha and Yin yoga?
Hatha Yoga: Faster pace (poses held 5-8 breaths), more movement, builds strength and flexibility, activates balanced nervous system. Yin Yoga: Slower pace (poses held 3-5 minutes), minimal effort, targets deep connective tissues, activates parasympathetic relaxation. Many students do both for a complete practice.
How often should I practise yoga?
Consistency matters more than intensity. 1-2 times per week creates noticeable benefits. 2-3 times per week brings significant transformation. Start with what’s realistic. It’s better to practise once weekly consistently than commit to 3x weekly then abandon it.
During Class
Is it normal to be sore after yoga?
Mild muscle soreness 24-48 hours after class is normal, especially if you’re new. This is different from pain during class. Pain is a warning sign—modify the pose or skip it and talk to Tanya.
What if I feel emotional or start crying?
This is completely normal and healthy. Yoga releases emotions stored in the body, particularly in hips, lower back, and shoulders. This isn’t something to suppress—it’s the body’s natural healing process. Your emotions are welcome here.
Can I modify poses?
Yes, absolutely. Your body is your best teacher. Tanya offers modifications throughout class. Using props and modifications isn’t “easier”—it’s smarter practice that honours your unique body.
Physical Health
I have back pain. Can I do yoga?
Often, yes. Yoga can significantly relieve back pain, but certain poses may need modification. Tell Tanya about your back pain. For chronic or severe pain, personal training is especially valuable.
I’m pregnant. Can I practise yoga?
Yes, with modifications. Tell Tanya you’re pregnant. Generally avoid deep twists, modify inversions in later pregnancy, and focus on supported positions, breathing, and gentle movement. Personal training is especially helpful during pregnancy.
I have anxiety/panic attacks. Will yoga help?
Yes. Yoga is remarkably effective for anxiety because it directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system, teaches breathing techniques that calm panic, reduces cortisol, and creates emotional resilience. Many students report significantly reduced baseline anxiety after consistent practice.
I have trouble sleeping. Will yoga help?
Yes. Yoga is one of the most effective natural approaches to sleep improvement. It regulates circadian rhythm, reduces nighttime racing thoughts, activates the relaxation response, and reduces cortisol. Practise 2-3+ times weekly for best results. Evening and Yin classes are particularly helpful.
