Private Yoga Lessons NW11 | 1-on-1 with a Certified Teacher

Written by Tanya — Yoga Alliance RYS 200 (ID 252157), trained at Devvrat Yoga School, Varkala, India (December 2025). Tanya teaches Hatha and Yin yoga at Your Ritual Yoga in Golders Green, NW11.

Private yoga lessons in London carry an undeserved reputation for exclusivity. The assumption tends to be that one-to-one yoga is a luxury — something reserved for those who can afford a premium, or who want a personalised service in the way that one might commission a bespoke suit.

The reality is more practical than that. For certain people, in certain circumstances, a private yoga session does not just offer a better experience than a group class — it offers a fundamentally different kind of help. And in those cases, it is not a luxury at all. It is the right tool.

This post covers the situations in which private yoga consistently outperforms group classes, who tends to benefit most, and what to expect from a one-to-one session at Your Ritual Yoga in NW11.

1. When 1-on-1 Yoga Becomes the Obvious Answer

A group class is a wonderful thing. In a small, well-taught group — say, 6–12 students — an experienced teacher can observe and adjust with meaningful attention. The shared energy of a group practice is genuinely supportive, and for many people, the community element is itself part of why they keep coming.

But a group class is, by definition, a shared experience. The sequence is designed to suit the average body in the room that day. The pace is set by the group. Modifications are offered verbally and generally, and there is a limit to how tailored the instruction can be when multiple people need guidance simultaneously.

For most students, this is entirely sufficient. For some, it is not. And the gap between “sufficient” and “what this person actually needs” is exactly where private yoga lives.

2. Who Benefits Most: 6 Archetypes

Injury, Chronic Pain, Severe Sleep Issues

If you are coming to yoga with a specific physical concern — a herniated disc, a knee replacement, chronic lower back pain, fibromyalgia, persistent hip or shoulder injuries — a group class teacher cannot safely give you the individual attention your situation requires.

In a one-to-one session, we can build a practice around your specific anatomy and restrictions. Postures can be chosen, adapted, or avoided based on what you are managing. We can work with whatever your physiotherapist has indicated, or simply with your own body’s signals, without any pressure to keep up with the group or attempt shapes that are not appropriate for you.

For severe sleep difficulties — which often have a nervous-system component — Yin yoga in a private setting can be particularly powerful. Without the ambient noise and gentle social awareness of a group class, the nervous system can drop more completely into stillness.

High-Achievers Maximising Minutes

There is a category of person for whom time is genuinely the scarcest resource. They want yoga — they know it helps, they’ve felt the difference — but they cannot always commit to a fixed weekly class time, and when they do practise, they want maximum benefit from each session.

Private yoga suits this person well. Sessions can be scheduled flexibly. The content is tailored to what the body most needs that day — which a high-output professional’s body may not need to be the same thing every week. And there is no warm-up time lost to teaching beginners or waiting for the group to find a shape.

Trauma-Informed Considerations

Yoga is increasingly understood as a valuable support for people processing trauma — but a conventional group class environment is not always appropriate for this work. Elements like close physical proximity to others, hands-on adjustments, or the unpredictability of a group setting can be activating rather than settling.

A private session allows the environment to be fully controlled, the pace to be completely self-directed, and the teacher to develop a relationship of trust before any physical guidance is offered. If this area is relevant to you, please mention it when enquiring — it shapes everything about how a session is structured.

Complete Beginners Who Want a Safe On-Ramp

Arriving at a group yoga class as a complete beginner and not knowing any of the cues, posture names, or conventions can be distracting enough to make the class feel stressful rather than calming. A private session removes that layer entirely.

One or two private sessions to establish a foundation — how to breathe consciously, what the basic postures ask of the body, how to find your own edge rather than following the person next to you — can make a group class experience far more useful and enjoyable when you arrive.

3. What a Private Session at Your Ritual Yoga Looks Like

Every private session at Your Ritual Yoga begins with an intake conversation. This is not a lengthy form-filling exercise — it is a genuine conversation about what brings you to yoga, what your body is navigating, what you would like more of, and what you want to avoid.

From there, the session is built in response to that information. This might mean:

  • A full Hatha sequence with specific alignment coaching for your body
  • A Yin practice targeting particular areas of chronic holding (hips, lumbar spine, shoulders)
  • A blended practice that begins with gentle mobilisation, moves into Yin holds, and closes with pranayama and sound
  • A focus on breathwork alone, if the nervous system needs regulating before anything physical is appropriate

The First 4 Sessions: What We Cover

For clients who commit to a short series of sessions (recommended for anyone with a specific goal or concern), the first four tend to follow a natural arc:

Session 1: Assessment, foundations, breath, and basic Hatha postures. Understanding what your body is doing and where the patterns are.

Session 2: Building on the foundation. Introducing Yin holds for the areas that showed tension in session 1. Beginning to develop the breath as an internal tool.

Session 3: Refining alignment, deepening the practice, introducing pranayama techniques suited to your nervous-system state.

Session 4: Review and integration. By this point, students typically have a clear sense of what serves them most — and a short home practice they can return to between sessions.

4. Pricing, Packages, and Frequency

Private yoga sessions at Your Ritual Yoga are available by appointment. Please enquire via the contact page for current availability and pricing.

For those considering frequency: most clients find the greatest benefit from either weekly one-to-one sessions (for those working through a specific concern) or a fortnightly private session combined with one or two group classes per week.

Both approaches are valid. The right frequency is the one you can sustain.

5. How to Book and What to Expect from Your Intake

The simplest way to begin is to send a message via the contact page or directly to yourritualyoga@gmail.com. Mention briefly what brings you to private yoga — injury, stress, sleep, beginner status, or something else — and we will arrange a short conversation before your first session to make sure it is the right fit.

There is no obligation. If, after that conversation, a group class seems more appropriate for your needs right now, we will say so. The about page has more about Tanya’s background and training, which may help you decide whether this is the right teacher for you.

Private yoga lessons in London do not have to mean a central-London studio with central-London pricing. In NW11, at Your Ritual Yoga, the intention is to make thoughtful, personal yoga support accessible to those in the local community who genuinely need it.

If one-to-one support feels like the right next step, please enquire about private sessions at Your Ritual Yoga. We will take the time to understand what you need before recommending anything.
